I’m not sure if this will work, but I seem to have found a tiny spark of luck. The power’s out, my cell phone has zero signal, and I only have about ten minutes of battery life left on my laptop. About thirty minutes ago, we climbed up on the roof to hopefully protect ourselves, and in conjunction I seemed to have found a working wifi point. It must be the extra range from being out on the roof, in the night air which is letting me find this working connection, as our entire neighborhood appears to be without power.
The zombies seem to be having a field day on all the college students in this area. I only pray that they’re distracted enough by nubile UCSB flesh to stay away from our building. We’ve been keeping as quiet as possible, but we still see a few of those undead stumbling their way down the street every few minutes.
Since the power’s out, I can see multiple fires on the horizon, towards the campus and beyond in to Santa Barbara. I’m not sure what’s burning, but my guess is that it’s some fairly large buildings, and perhaps some cars.
Before the power went out, I was watching the various news channels almost all day long, and it appears that this is not just centralized to our area. I’m not sure what caused this zombie uprising, but I don’t think anyone is at this point. We’re just trying to survive.
A few weeks ago, Brad and I were discussing our zombie strategies. It included meeting up at the nearby Costco, which is easily barricaded, and stocked quite well with provisions and weaponry. Once we establish a good set of supplies, our goal is to find some kind of boat, and head out to either the oil rigs about 5 miles out in the Pacific, or to one of the Channel Islands, about 25 miles out. The Channel Islands seem like a good idea, because even though zombies aren’t drownable, they’ll certainly take a long time to travel through the deep water (maybe 1,500+ feet? I’m not too sure), which hopefully will buy us enough time for someone to figure out how to fight these bastards. The islands are uninhabited, and unless the Chumash Indians buried their dead here centuries ago, they should be zombie free.
My most difficult job right now, aside from keeping us safe from the zombies, and the panicked students is locating Brad and Cat, and then getting us to Costco. I’ve got a full tank of gas in the Regal, and it’s a 3,600lb car, so I think we can go a little Mad Max on some zombie asses and make it safely to Cat & Brad’s, and then to Costco. Beyond that, we’ll have to hope for the best to get to the Channel Islands.
I’ll post again if I can, but at the rate my battery is dying, and the chances of power being restored anywhere is pretty slim. For any of you out there reading this, good luck to you. Don’t let them take you without a fight.
